In American architecture, painted ladies occurs when Victorian and Edwardian style houses are painted in three or more colors, enhancing the detail.
This term was first used by Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larsen in their 1978 book Painted Ladies - San Francisco's Resplendent Victorians.
The city's most famous painted ladies are a row of Victorian houses along Steiner Street near Alamo Square. These houses are often called the Painted Ladies, as if it were a proper name.
