Windmill in Holland

The Rat is an octagonal tower mill in IJlst and was built in 1828. Next to the windmill is the miller's house. The Rat is one of the three wood sawmills in Friesland. This mill originates from the Zaanstreek and was built in 1683 as a beam saw. At the time he was called "De Walrot", which meant "water rat". From 1918 electric sawing was done in the mill and the mill was stripped of its hood. Until 1950, business was cut. Nowadays, wood is sawn on a voluntary basis and the mill is accessible to visitors.
