Old gipsy wagon in UK.

The first caravans were built at the beginning of the 19th century by British Roma gypsies. But the British children's book writer Gordon Stables is considered the inventor of the modern caravan, where people now go on holiday on a massive scale. Stables came up with the idea in 1880 to build a caravan that he wanted to use as a recreational vehicle. He had the more than five-meter-long colossus pulled by two horses and traveled after his retirement throughout England.

Soon he was followed by other retired men who were traveling around in a caravan as a way of relaxation. Together with them, Stables even founded the Caravan Club of Great Britain and Ireland, of which he became chairman himself.
