The Zaanse Schans in the Netherlands

The Zaanse Schans is a neighborhood with historic wooden buildings in the municipality of Zaanstad. It is located on the Zaan, opposite the village Zaandijk and next to the Julianabrug. It is a famous tourist destination with hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, set up with the intention of preserving the historical heritage, but it is not a closed open-air museum.
The houses are inhabited, so that not only tourists come to the site. The neighborhood was named in 1961 after the redoubt Diederik Sonoy, governor in the service of William of Orange, had built in 1574 to stop the Spanish troops.
