Wooden house in Zaandam, the Netherlands

Between 1961 and 1974, many old wooden buildings from the Zaanstreek with low-loaders were taken to the Zaanse Schans expansion plan and restored to their former glory. A few mills were also moved here. Only the substructure of the paint mill the Kat (originally an oil mill) and the oil mill the Bonte Hen, as well as the oil mill the Os are still in their original yard. Later, buildings were also regularly moved to the Zaanse Schans.

The neighborhood was named in 1961 after the redoubt Diederik Sonoy, governor in the service of William of Orange, had built in 1574 to stop the Spanish troops.
