Gatehouse of the Skipness castle located on the Kintyre peninsula

Gatehouse of the Skipness castle.
The Skipness castle is a thirteenth-century castle with a sixteenth-century donjon, located at Skipness on the Kintyre peninsula in the Scottish region of Argyll and Bute. The castle was built by the MacSweens, who supported the Norwegians. After the Battle of Largs in 1263 the castle came into the hands of the MacDonalds who fought for the English in the Scottish independence wars and later joined the Scots. MacDonalds lost their position of power at the end of the fifteenth century; the castle went to the Campbells, graves of Argyll. The castle was abandoned at the end of the sixteenth century.
