Minakshi temple in India

The complex consists of two separate temples. The small temple is dedicated to Minakshi (Parvati) and is only accessible to women. The large temple is dedicated to Shiva and is only accessible to men. Against the two temples lies a large pond, called Potramarai Kulam. This is surrounded by a cloister. There is also a hall with a thousand carved pillars. The complex is surrounded by a wall with four gopurams, the highest of which is more than 50 meters high. A further eight can be found within the walls.

In 1310 this temple was pillaged and destroyed during an invasion by the Islamic general Malik Kafur. The current complex was built in the 16th and 17th century.
