Tree hollows occur in both living and dead trees.

Tree hollows occur in both living and dead trees. Some tree hollows have been carved out by birds, primates or other animals looking for food or making a home. Other tree hollows have grown on their own or started as a hole in the bark.
Such holes are caused by, among other things, the breaking of branches, lightning strikes and damage by fungi, bacteria or insects.
Because part of the bark has been removed, the underlying wood no longer has protection against the weather and further damage by all kinds of organisms.
